The men of Operation Gunnerside faced no further opposition. In silence, they quickly moved to the cliff and descended. Einar had put the box back in Aumont’s pack. Instead of the old expert climber helping Einar, Einar helped Aumont. Aumont’s hands were riddled with lacerations, some to the bone. The men had bandaged his wounds.

When they were two kilometers away from Vemork’s outer fence, the explosives team—Einar and Aumont included—would embark on the long trip to Sweden. They would keep to the woods and the wilds, avoiding all towns and all people. The cover team would immediately disburse and take individual paths out of Norway, hiding when necessary, always moving toward Sweden.

Everyone had survived. Keyser’s wound wasn’t bad; he could move on his own.

Rønneberg congratulated the men on altering the course of the war, but his words rang hollow. They’d all seen a thing they’d never thought possible, something that was—in some ways, if not all ways—even worse than a bomb that could wipe out a city and kill hundreds of thousands.

They’d seen Svart Hund.

Before Rønneberg sent everyone on their way, he let the old Englishman have the final words of Operation Gunnerside.

“I give you a gift,” Aumont said to them. “The gift of your lives. Should you ever mention this incident to anyone—ever—the occupant of the box will know. It will come for you. There is no safe place, in this world or the next. You have seen its hunger, its appetite for souls. It will swallow yours, just as it did those of the Germans who died this night.”

Later, Einar would recall little of the grueling trek to Sweden. He would recall little because he observed little. During the entire trip, he ate when he was hungry, he slept when he was tired, but he paid no attention to the countryside.

He had eyes only for Aumont.

For Aumont’s pack.

And the impossible thing that lurked inside it.

He had eyes only for Svart Hund.
